Nelly Furtado was raised in a Roman Catholic home, she was named after a Soviet Gymnast Nellie Kim, when Nelly Furtado started singing she still was at the age of 4, also at that age she performed with her mother at the church that they usually used to go to in celebration of the Portugal Day. When Nelly Furtado started playing insturments she still was at the age of 9, her religous beliefs are still not very clear but she believes that there is a God and ten commandments that the human being should follow, also that we as humans should avoid the seven deadly sins. Aside from playing the instruments from a very young age Nelly Furtado also wrote her own songs when she still was at the age of 12, also as a teenager she started performing with a live marching band. Nelly Furtado is very dedicated when it comes to her doing what she likes to do , this was acknowledged and the reason for this is how her family taught her the work ethics that she goes by these days, she spent eight summers beside her mother working as a chambermaid. her mother at that time was a housekeeper in Victoria. So Nelly Furtado was shaped positively because of her working class background.
When Nelly Furtado started interacting with other musicians it was the underground rappers and DJs that she first interacted with, when she still was in the eleventh grade she met a member from the hip-hop group Plains of Fascination(Tallis Newkirk). After their meeting Nelly Furtado decided that she should join the group in making a new record , so she contributed with vocals on “Join the Ranks” album, the album was released in the year 1996, the track that Furtado was featured in was called “Waiting 4 the Streets”. In that same year Nelly Furtado graduated from the secondary school and travelled to Toronto so she could continue with her career, so after arriving there she joined Newkirk in the forming of Nelstar, a Trip Hop duo that consists of Nelly Furtado and Tallis Newkirk. After working for a short period of time Nelly Furtado believed that trip hop didn’t represent who Furtado was and what she believed in, so she left the group and planned to move back home.
Before Nelly Furtado moved back to her hometown she performed at the Honey Jam in the year 1997 which is a talent show for only females, her performance was excellent and attracted the attention of many people including Gerald Eaton AKA jarvis Church, he belonged to The Philosepher Kings, so he and another member of the kings “Brian West” helped Nelly Furtado produce a demo that she can present to record companies. After this she moved back to Toronto, and the materials that she worked for lead to a record deal with DreamWorks Records.
